3 days of public events for Paterno starts Tuesday

For decades they cheered him, now it’s time for Penn State students and alumni to mourn Joe Paterno.

Three days of public events will begin Tuesday as Penn Staters from State College and beyond say goodbye to the man who led the Nittany Lions to 409 wins over 46 years.

The 85-year-old Paterno died of lung cancer on Sunday. He learned of his diagnosis in November just days after he was fired in the aftermath of the child sex-abuse charges against former assistant Jerry Sandusky.

Although the report characterizes that figure as “unacceptable,” recent graduates still fared better than job seekers with only a high school diploma, who saw an unemployment rate of 22.9 percent. High school dropouts saw an “almost unthinkable” 31.5 percent rate, according to the study.

Even within recent college graduates, the statistics vary widely.

‘Late surge’ in applications helps reduce year-on-year fall in Ucas figures

Data released by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service today show 283,680 domestic students had applied to university by 19 December – down 23,228 on last year’s figure of 306,908.

Once a 13 per cent rise in non-European Union applicants is taken into account, the overall drop in applicants to UK universities stands at 6.4 per cent.

The decline is significantly smaller than previous interim figures have suggested.
