Canadian Valley Technology Center graduate still aiming high

Gibson enrolled as a high school student in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration program at Canadian Valley Technology Center with a distinct goal.

“I want to own a heat and air company so I can make a positive impact on our economy and become successful while doing it,” the 19-year-old said.

Gibson, of Oklahoma City, completed his training in May 2011 and immediately went to work as an apprentice for a licensed contractor.

His training earned him the equivalent of two of the required three years to sit for the journeyman’s license exam. The remaining year equivalency had to be earned on the job.

BYU’s Davies good at leading the “charge”; plus Carlino’s thoughts on UCLA scandal

The part of a basketball floor that arguably is the most polarizing among any panel of college basketball coaches, also happens to be a good consideration of why Brandon Davies is quite successful.

The BYU junior center has taken full advantage of the “restricted arc,” the semi-circle painted under each hoop that is used to help referees call blocking fouls or charges. If a defensive player has a foot inside the “U”-shaped area when contact is made by a player making a move toward the hoop, it should be a block.

But Davies, especially in 16 games of West Coast Conference play, remained effective at getting calls to go his way at the defensive end of the floor.

Four new coaches highlight Pac-12 spring

< ![endif]--> Oregon coach Chip Kelly in a phone interview before the Rose Bowl was baffled. How the heck could little-old-him be important to a reporter?

“The big story,” he said conspiratorially,”is all these new coaches.”

Well, it’s the big story now as the Pac-12 turns its attention away from the 2011 season and toward 2012 spring practices. And, of course, Kelly is part of a reason there are four new coaches in the conference. Read full post…

$50 million Shawnee propositions fail

The five propositions were for a half-cent sales tax for 10 years and an estimated 12 percent increase in property taxes for the next 20 years.

None of the propositions received more than 25 percent approval. The projects included a $19 million regional sports complex and $13 million in road improvements.

Phil Tomlinson, a vocal opponent of the propositions, said that they expected the propositions to fail but were surprised by how many voters came out against the measures.
