Cimmino selected to coach East team at All-American Championship

Mount Vernon coach Bob Cimmino has been picked to coach the East team at this years All-American Championship, which is scheduled for April 1 at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans.

The first game of the doubleheader will pit Cimminos East team against the West. The North will meet the South in the second part of the doubleheader. Tip-off is 3:00 p.m. Each game will be aired live on ESPN3 with a rebroadcast of the doubleheader beginning at 9:00 p.m. on ESPNU.

Jabarie Hinds was selected for the event last year and played for the East team.

This years East roster does not feature any local players.

Pompano Beach teacher suspended 10 days for remarks to Haitian student

A reading teacher at Blanche Ely High in Pompano Beach will receive a 10-day unpaid suspension for allegedly yelling at a Haitian student in her class, calling him a “little chocolate boy” and a “chocolate that nobody wanted.”

According to the district, Leslie Rainer, 46, of Deerfield Beach, has been spoken to twice before about her remarks to minority students, including a case in which she allegedly told a student, “I wish they would put you in a boat and send you back where you came from.”

The Broward School Board voted 8-1 Tuesday in favor of the suspension, which originally was proposed to be three days but was increased by Superintendent Robert Runcie.
