ECU enrollment up for sixth semester in a row
Anonymous East Central University The Evening News Thu Jan 20, 2011, 08:03 AM CST — Spring enrollment at East Central University is up by 3 percent compared to spring enrollment one year ago, ECU officials have announced. Counting summer terms, this is the sixth semester in a row that ECUs enrollment has been higher than the previous comparable semester, said ECU President John Hargrave. In addition, this springs total credit hours increased by 4.1 percent over spring 2010. ECU has 4,662 students this spring, a number only slightly lower than last falls record enrollment of 4,893 students. The spring semester typically has a lower enrollment, mainly because of fall graduation and fewer beginning freshmen. still beats ECUs previous record enrollment in 2004 when 4,661 students enrolled for the fall semester, said Dr. Duane C. Anderson, ECU provost and vice president for academic affairs. In spring 2008, Anderson said, “4,196 students attended ECU, compared to 4,662 students this spring. Thus, the universitys student population increased 11.1 percent in this short period. The enrollment increases are a response partly to the economy, he said, but also to the universitys efforts to expand programming in various areas, including the fine arts, Native American studies, nursing and masters degrees, including the recent master of science in accounting degree. ECUs residence halls also remain nearly full at about 90 percent occupancy.
