Local school floods
Randy Mitchell City Editor Evening News The Evening News Fri Feb 04, 2011, 11:30 AM CST — As if the severe snowstorm werent enough of a hardship on area schools, Latta Elementary flooded Wednesday. Cliff Johnson, Latta Schools superintendent, said a water pipe broke and flooded the west side of the building. It flooded 11 classrooms, four offices and a library with about an inch-and-a-half of water, Johnson said. It happened probably late afternoon (Wednesday). We found out about it at around 6 p.m. (Wednesday). Officials quickly shut off the water to the school to stop the flood. Johnson said a cleanup crew worked through the night to remove the water. Theyve gotten all the water up, Johnson said. Now theyre in the process of going through the procedure to dry out the building. Johnson said he is hoping to have the elementary school open in time for Monday classes. Well try to open back up on Monday, but I dont know if thats going to happen, Johnson said. Johnson and other school officials spent the day Thursday doing inventory on everything that was damaged. Workers used fans and special equipment to dry the flooring and carpet. Johnson said he will notify parents by the usual channels if the school cannot open for Monday classes.
