Mayor-elect Brown Talks Education
BALDWIN, Fla. — Mayor-elect Alvin Brown started a busy inaugural week today by visiting all parts of the city. On Friday, Brown will be sworn in as the city’s new mayor.
Brown started at a steel mill outside Baldwin, then visited the local middle-high school to meet with students, parents and faculty.
“Education gives you options and I want you to have options,” said Brown from a stage in the cafeteria.
Brown plans to hire a chief education officer to help him keep public education in the public eye. The position would be funded by private dollars.
Trey Csar, a spokesperson for the Jacksonville Public Education Fund, said Brown is headed in the right direction by having an education point person on his staff.
Brown also said he wants to hire retired teachers to handle tutoring chores in schools and create a Learn-To-Earn program, which would allow students to live on a college campus for the experience while also having a summer job.
The mayor-elect has another busy day scheduled for Tuesday, including a stop at Naval Station Mayport.
