Putnam City School Board approves election boundaries
School board election boundaries were redrawn following the latest census to balance the population in election districts.
“It’s a requirement of state law so the districts remain balanced,” school district spokesman Steve Lindley said. In the decade since the last census, families had moved in and out of the area. Redrawing the boundaries ensures the population of the five election districts is as equal as is practical.
A resolution approved by board members set the annual school election date for Feb. 14. A member for Office No. 2 will be selected at that time. Mark Bledsoe, board president, holds the position.
Board members serve five-year terms.
The filing period for candidates begins at 8 a.m. Dec. 5 and ends at 5 p.m. Dec. 7. Contest of candidacy petitions can be filed until 5 p.m. Dec. 9. If needed, runoff elections will be April 3.
Also during the meeting, Superintendent Paul Hurst announced the district received a $1.2 million grant to be spread over three years to bring in counselors, social workers and mental health professionals for Hilldale Elementary School, Tulakes Elementary School, Wiley Post Elementary School, Putnam City West High School, Putnam City Academy and district prekindergarten programs.
“I think it has great potential to help students and, in turn, help them do better in school,” Lindley said.
The district is one of two in Oklahoma and among 43 nationally to receive the grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant will allow for more mental health professionals to focus on the individual needs of children in the district.
