Anonymous Evening News The Evening News Fri Dec 31, 2010, 11:37 AM CST — There were 71 entries in  the annual science fair.

Seventy-one elementary students and those from grades  eight to 12 participated in Sasakwa School’s annual science fair, according to high school principal and eighth grade instructor Kyle Wilson.

“Students have been  working  for weeks in order to select a science topic and carry out six steps of the scientific method: statement of a clear, specific question; clear and specific hypothesis; a methodology with collection of data and displayed in terms  of logs, graphs, tables and photographs; a conclusion supported by data and conclusion relevant to the hypothesis,” Wilson said.

Topics on display via poster presentations showed a wide variety. Judging was based on a judging rubric with a criteria of the scientific approach, originality and simplicity for a total perfect score of 44 points.

Judging of the presentations Thursday, Dec. 9, resulted in awards for first, second, and third place in the eighth grade students’ work and the same awards for high school students. First place in the  elementary  category  went to Randee Taylor for her display of a comparison of density using an egg to observe its ability to float; second place to Dawson Taylor for his poster on an answer to the question of does holding your breath affect one’s heart rate; and third place went to Felicity Davis for her poster showing  a comparison of five dishwashing products and their effectiveness as evidenced by amount and size of bubbles.

In the eighth grade, first place went to Shawn Taylor:  he compared size and weight of bowling balls and their effect on knocking down the number of bowling pins; second place to Christy Comer  for her study of the amount of gas produced from a decaying process using vegetables and fruits; and third place to Shace Batey who determined the attraction of lady bugs to selected brands of colognes.

Ninth grade first place recipient is Nicole Tucker: a comparison of a variety of light bulbs’ effectiveness; second place went to Summer Yahola: a comparison of five warmers and which one melted candle wax most quickly.  Tenth grade: first place – Kelly Edwards with a study of which kind of white flower absorbed a liquid color to the greatest extent and the result was carnations; second place -  Forrest Henry -  examples of creative lighting using Styrofoam or steel wool; third place – Destiny Prevost -  a study of the effect of surface tension on the mobility of small objects.  Eleventh grade: first place -  Laramie Batey – a comparison of bacterial count in human mouth versus a dog’s mouth – a dog’s mouth contains more bacteria; second place –  Alongkorn Phochanapan,  nicknamed “Yo,” an international exchange student from Thailand,  with his study of  the formation of bubbles using selected solutions; and third place to Sunny Stephens  – a study of the effectiveness of sand bags during a flood situation. The twelfth grade first place winner is Paige House with her study of the effect of music on heart rate during exercise; second place – Felicia Roberts – a comparison of selected antacids and the amount and speed of relief;  third place went to Nayari  Medina, an international student from Venezuela –a comparison of selected soil samples and their respective pH characteristic either acidic, alkalinic or neutral.

First place winners have the option to enter their presentation in the state Regional  Science Fair competition  at Seminole State College March 12 and 13.  Winners from the regional event will  go to the State Science Fair at East Central University March 25 -27. There will be significant  prizes for state winners.

Jim Mathews, Sasakwa Public School superintendent, said he is  “proud of the efforts the students put into each project and the posters showed much originality, variety.

“I just know that many parents and older siblings assisted in the development of these poster presentations,” Mathews said. “There were more entries this year than last year and both of the science instructors, Mr. Wilson and Mr. Griffin,  are to be commended for the ways they helped each student.”
