State Extending Search Deadline for New Education Commissioner

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The State Board of Education is extending its search for a new Florida education commissioner.       The board Friday agreed to set a new deadline of midnight June 6. Applications previously had to be postmarked no later than midnight Wednesday.       The 19 applicants so far include Tom Gallagher, the state’s second-to-last elected education commissioner. Gallagher, a Republican, held the post from 1991 through 2001.       He was succeeded by Charlie Crist who later was elected governor. Gallagher also has served as state treasurer, and he was the first person elected chief financial officer.       Other applicants include Florida Career and Adult Education Chancellor Loretta Costin and former Hernando County School Superintendent Wayne Alexander.
