Tulsa suspends WR Damaris Johnson

Tulsa was already facing a tough challenge in its opener at No. 1 Oklahoma. Now it appears the Golden Hurricane might have to play the game without one of their best players.

Receiver/return specialist Damaris Johnson was suspended indefinitely Friday after he was questioned by police following the arrest of his girlfriend, Chamon Jones. She was arrested on an embezzlement complaint. Jones is accused of selling Johnson heavily discounted merchandise on two different occasions: once charging him just under $13 for more than $1,500 worth of goods; and 34 cents for merchandise totaling $1,283.

Johnson holds the NCAA’s all-time records for all-purpose yards with 7,796 yards and career kickoff return yardage with 3,417 yards. He led the nation as a sophomore (224.4 ypg) and junior (202.2 ypg) in all-purpose yardage.

In addition to his special teams play, Johnson has caught a pass in all 39 career games he has played, and has had 150 plays go for more than 20 yards in his career. If he is out for the opener, Tulsa would be missing its top three receivers from a season ago.
