Coventry’s Olson earns All-America softball honors at CCRI

Former Coventry All-State catcher Ashley Olson, who helped guide the Oakers to back-to-back Division I state titles, has been named to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Softball All-America third team.

In her first season at the Community College of Rhode Island, she led the Lady Knights’ offense, shattering the single season hit record with 62 hits in 117 at bats, previously held by former Warwick Vets All-Stater Steph Morse (59 hits in 2010).

Ranked third by the NJCAA in hitting, Olson smacked 15 doubles, tying the school record also held by Morse and Nicole Kufel, to go along with her four triples and eight home runs. She also became CCRI’s single-season RBI leader with 62, breaking Morse’s record (50) in that category, as well.

“I am very happy for Ashley,” CCRI coach Liz Afonso said in a release from the school. “She works hard every day and is a leader both on and off the field, which is why we named her a freshman captain in the beginning of the year. She has lived up to that potential in her first collegiate season as a force both offensively and defensively, getting key hits and RBIs, while doing a great job catching and negating opponents’ running games with her rocket arm and quick release. Ashley will be a big part of our success next year.”
