Interscholastic League to study the start and length of its winter season
PROVIDENCE — Responding to an appeal from the Rhode Island Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, the Rhode Island Interscholastic League will review its decision to start practice for winter sports the Monday before Thanksgiving.
The RIIL will also re-examine the length of the winter season.
The Principals Committee on Athletics discussed both issues at its meeting Monday.
The RIIAAA executive board expressed its support of the new single boys basketball championship format for 2011 but added its concern over the Nov. 22 start of practice and the possibility that some teams could play more than 30 games this coming season, which would have a financial impact on those schools.
Tom Mezzanotte, executive director of the RIIL, asked the RIIAAA representative on the Principals’ Committee, Michael Traficante of Cranston, to work with his group and submit a thorough proposal for consideration and possible implementation next year.
