Portsmouth-La Salle postgame reflections

PORTSMOUTH — A few observations and reflections from Portsmouth’s 23-6 victory over La Salle on Tuesday night in the Division I football semifinal at Portsmouth’s John F. Kennedy Field:

Kudos to the La Salle players who politely interrupted Portsmouth coach Ryan Moniz while he talked with sports writers to congratulate him on his team’s victory and to wish him well in the Super Bowl on Saturday against Bishop Hendricken. The gesture was a touch of class.

Best wishes to that quartet of La Salle players who consoled each other with hugs and shared tears. It might have been their last high-school game together.

Good health to Portsmouth quarterback/linebacker/safety Ben Willett, who limped off the field late in the fourth quarter but said after the game that his ankle is fine and he will play Saturday.

Good luck to the Bishop Hendricken players lining up against the Portsmouth trio of James Desmet (6-6, 345), Tyler Martin (6-4, 305) and Justin Lafleur (6-3, 305) on Saturday at Cranston Stadium.

Congratulations to the Portsmouth marching band for its fine pregame and halftime performances.

Be wary of those personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, Portsmouth. They will hurt you big-time in the championship game. The team that commits fewer mistakes usually wins title games, and those infractions are unnecessary. If the crew that worked the semifinal is typical, the officials working the Super Bowl will not hesitate to throw a flag.
