Where will the next generation of charter school leaders come from? Find out at “Driving Quality”

Excellent schools require excellent leaders, but as the charter movement expands where will the next generation of charter school leaders come from? Across the country, organizations are recognizing the potential of charter incubators to recruit, train, and support the charter principals and CEOs of the future. The Fordham Institute is teaming up with the CEE-Trust to host a discussion with some of the groups leading the way on December 7 at our Washington, D.C. office. Driving Quality: Can charter incubators solve the problem of too many mediocre charter schools?

Author Studies in the Elementary Classroom

Author studies or celebrations are a fun addition to your regular Language Arts lessons. You can use a study as an extension of your existing curriculum, tie it into related topics from other subjects, or just allow the children the opportunity to “meet” a writer/illustrator through their work. Here, you will find a guide to author study resources based on several of the more popular writers and illustrators found at the elementary level.

There are a variety of methods for conducting author studies. Some teachers prefer to highlight a different author every month, while others may spend an entire semester devoted to one particular writer and/or illustrator.

On World Pneumonia Day, a call for healthier stoves

Today is World Pneumonia Day, a day dedicated to raising public awareness of the nearly 1.6 million childhood pneumonia deaths that occur around the world each year. The lung infection is the most common cause of death in children younger than 5.

Pneumonia is far less risky than it used to be for children in the developed world: a course of antibiotics usually clears the infection. But kids in developing countries are not so lucky. Not only do they have poor access to antibiotics, they are also much more likely to live in conditions that foster pneumonia.

2 coaches, 2 styles, both winners

One wears a perpetual scowl, his words robotic and succinct. With Nick Saban, it’s all about “the process,” which means running his football program with the meticulousness of a CEO. It may come across as cold and detached _ even ruthless _ but it sure works.

Then there’s Les Miles. He eats grass and sings with his players. He mangles words so badly there’s an entire website dedicated to his malaprops. He thrives on gambles and trick plays, even if it gives the impression he’s running a game by the seat of his pants.

Guess what? His methods work, too.
