FCAT Delay Has Parents Scrambling to Make Transfers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.– School district offices have been crowded with parents looking to transfer students out of the district’s failing schools.

With a delay in when the FCAT scores were released, Duval County had to extend its deadline for transfers.

But parents now only have until the new deadline Monday.

By law, parents of students at schools that received a failing grade two out of the last four yearscan request a transfer.

Rosalynn Spivey was moving her son out of Raines High School to Atlantic Coast or Mandarin.

“I feel like that’s the best choice for him, as far as he’ll do better in a class environment, not around a lot of friends.”

The schools that fall into this category are:

  • Raines High
  • Ribault High
  • Jackson High
  • North Shore K-8
  • Pinedale Elementary
  • Forrest High

“We’re just having to work a lot faster, as soon as we get the applications in we can determine where the bus stops will be, so it’s kind of a ripple effect,” said Jill Johnson with Duval County Schools.

Johnson says the transfer applications can’t be faxed in so the best option is to drop them off in person.
