Two West Palm catholic elementary schools merging for 2012-13

WEST PALM BEACH — Two struggling catholic schools – Holy Name of Jesus and St. Juliana – will merge effective for the 2012-13 school year, the Diocese of Palm Beach recently announced.

The new school will be called St. Juliana Catholic School: A Ministry of St. Juliana and Holy Name of Jesus Parishes and will operate from St. Juliana on Olive Avenue in West Palm Beach.

This is a great opportunity for us to see some cost savings, said Gary Gelo, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese.

But Gelo said he didn’t know how much money the merger will save the Diocese. That number, he added, will depend on how many students enroll next year in the new school.

Putnam City School Board approves election boundaries

School board election boundaries were redrawn following the latest census to balance the population in election districts.

“It’s a requirement of state law so the districts remain balanced,” school district spokesman Steve Lindley said. In the decade since the last census, families had moved in and out of the area. Redrawing the boundaries ensures the population of the five election districts is as equal as is practical.

A resolution approved by board members set the annual school election date for Feb. 14. A member for Office No. 2 will be selected at that time. Mark Bledsoe, board president, holds the position.

Board members serve five-year terms.

Five things we learned: Carmel vs. Ben Davis

There was no conference championship on the line (Warren Central whacked Center Grove to wrap up the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference title), but . Here are five things we learned:

1. Carmel’s defense is serious: Ben Davis got a little bit of a running game established in the first half, but got zilch done on the ground on the second half and virtually nothing at all on offense. It was reminiscent of the second half of the Warren Central game for Carmel’s defense. The line seemed to get stronger and stronger as the game wore on, especially Langston Newton and Shawn Heffern.
