NCCU, Fayetteville State OK tuition increases

Trustees of North Carolina Central University and Fayetteville State University have approved 6.5 percent tuition increases for in-state undergraduates in 2012-13.

Tuition will go up $192 a year for N.C. Central undergrads and $242 for graduate students, while undergrads at Fayetteville State will pay an extra $158 and graduate students $184.

Both increases still must be approved by the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina system and state lawmakers before they can take effect.

Other UNC campuses also are looking to increase tuition to offset major cuts to state funding. N.C.

Fedora introduced as football coach at UNC

Larry Fedora says he’s excited to help North Carolina’s football program move forward.

Fedora was introduced as the Tar Heels’ coach Friday, a few hours after the terms of his seven-year contract were approved during a meeting of the school’s board of trustees.

With men’s basketball coach Roy Williams among the hundreds attending his introductory news conference, Fedora proclaimed it “the first day of a new era of UNC football.”

“You’d better buckle your seat belts and you better hold on,” Fedora said, “because it’s going to be a wild ride.”

The former Southern Mississippi coach received a deal worth more than $1.7 million annually.

Esme’s Blog: MN GOP: Broke And Leaderless

The sudden announcement by GOP Chair Tony Sutton that he is resigning sheds light on the embarrassing financial picture of the party.

State Republicans, who like to tout themselves as the party of fiscal responsibility, have at least $500,000 in unpaid bills. When Sutton took office in 2009, the party had a $1 million surplus.

Sutton deserves the credit for engineering the stunning GOP takeover of the Minnesota House and Senate. The DFL was left flat-footed and shocked by the loss of both houses. But Suttons leadership since has been lackluster at best.

The GOPs failure to put up any significant opponent to Sen. Amy Klobuchar is one example.
