On World Pneumonia Day, a call for healthier stoves

Today is World Pneumonia Day, a day dedicated to raising public awareness of the nearly 1.6 million childhood pneumonia deaths that occur around the world each year. The lung infection is the most common cause of death in children younger than 5.

Pneumonia is far less risky than it used to be for children in the developed world: a course of antibiotics usually clears the infection. But kids in developing countries are not so lucky. Not only do they have poor access to antibiotics, they are also much more likely to live in conditions that foster pneumonia.

2 coaches, 2 styles, both winners

One wears a perpetual scowl, his words robotic and succinct. With Nick Saban, it’s all about “the process,” which means running his football program with the meticulousness of a CEO. It may come across as cold and detached _ even ruthless _ but it sure works.

Then there’s Les Miles. He eats grass and sings with his players. He mangles words so badly there’s an entire website dedicated to his malaprops. He thrives on gambles and trick plays, even if it gives the impression he’s running a game by the seat of his pants.

Guess what? His methods work, too.

Week 9: Thursday’s schedule/scores

Ill be back out today, covering both of todays DeMatteo Bowls up at Somers High School. Itll be my first opportunity to see Pearl River, and, of course, will grant me another look at Somers, White Plains and Scarsdale.

Ill have updates on Twitter . Check tomorrow morning for predictions and previews on Saturday and Sundays Section 1 championship games and CHSFL quarterfinals, as well as the rest of this weekends games.

Also, since they havent appeared on here and Ive picked every game this year, I like Valhalla 28-6 and Brewster 20-13 tonight.

NC State wants to know about your home wildlife

Creatures. They’re everywhere: in your hot water heater, under your bed, even in your bellybutton. You don’t notice the vast majority of them, but Rob Dunn wants to change that.

The North Carolina State University professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has been working for years to help people see the scientific wonders in the everyday world, and he’s leading a new research project that aims to reach them where they live.
