Deal Awards $4.2M in Grants for GA Teacher Education

ATLANTA (AP) – Gov. Nathan Deal has awarded up to $4.2 million in grants to three state universities as part of the state’s “Race to the Top” program.

Deal said Friday that Columbus State University, West Georgia University, and Southern Polytechnic State University will use the money to replicate a math and science teacher preparation program from the University of Texas at Austin.  The aim is to help produce more science and math teachers for Georgia’s schools.

Georgia won $400 million last year from the U.S. Department of Education’s “Race to the Top” grant competition.
