All Cougs extra-innings softball: WSU soccer beats Coug volleyball, 5-2
Slideshow and article by Tim Marsh, WSU Today PULLMAN - The women’s soccer team squared off against the women’s volleyball team Wednesday evening, Aug. 11, at Bailey-Brayton field, in softball game that was all Cougars. In the end, the Cougar soccer team beat their WSU volleyball counterparts, 5-2, in exhibition action. Head coaches Matt Potter (soccer) and Andrew Palileo (volleyball) led their teams. (Video below) Donnie Marbut, WSU baseball head coach, was umpire. Tied, 1-1, after its scheduled five innings, the game went into extra innings with soccer outscoring volleyball by four runs to one in the seventh inning for the final score. Although billed as an exhibition between teams, some coaches of the teams got into action, too. Fans in the stands included members of the WSU football team. Scoring was kept on Bailey-Braytons new scoreboard which features a video board. The winners had five runs on 11 hits with four errors. The losers stats in the same respective categories, 2-9-5. Seasons begin for the teams — both 2009 NCAA postseason participants — later this month. On Aug. 20, WSU Soccer hosts Florida State at 3 p.m. on the Lower Soccer Field. On Aug. 27, WSU Volleyball plays U.C. Irvine at 7 p.m. in Bohler Gym as part of the Nike Cougar Invitational. Video by Matt Haugen, WSU News Service
